On February 22, 2017, a typical day when I was running behind in picking up groceries for home. I got my kids set up with the babysitter and while she was busy preparing dinner for them, I ran out to the local organics store near my home to get some healthy organic broccoli for my kids. I was also out of cash so I thought to myself, great, I will just pick up some cash at the ATM next to the ‘Alnatura’ store.
As I was about to step into the store, a lady standing outside stopped me. She asked if I would spare her a Euro. In that instant, I thought of what Peter said to the lame man at the Temple Gate named Beautiful in Acts 3:6. I felt this compassion arose inside of me and started talking to her, asking her, why she was standing there asking for money. She said she got retired early from her job and the benefits she is getting from the State are too little for her to live on. She was sharing an apartment with her life partner and they barely have money left for food after paying for rent and cigarettes. I told her directly that cigarettes are not something she could afford in her situation. She agreed, but she can’t kick the habit no matter how hard she tried. I then seized the opportunity to share with her how my husband managed to kick the habit after 30 years of being hooked and he did it with God’s empowerment. I also asked if she believed in God and whether I can lay hands on her and pray for her to be free of the addiction. She said yes. After the prayer, she said she felt so much warmth and peace and said she only felt that one time when other Christians ministering near the train station prayed for her. I shared the gospel with her and asked whether she will take a step of faith to believe that Jesus is the one true God who can bring real change to her, whether she will put her trust in Him as Savior and enter into a personal and living relationship with Him. To my surprise, she actually said yes. That evening of Feb 22, 2017, at around 6.45 pm she gave her life to Jesus. I was buzzing as I rushed home to get a Bible for her without cash or broccoli in hand :)
EE Friends, please stand in the gap for Lydia, that the Holy Spirit will hover over her and guide her as she takes baby steps with Jesus. Perhaps our paths will cross again or that He will send laborers to care for her :)
1. Move from godly compassion not PITY, pity comes from the flesh while compassion is from the Holy Spirit
2. Be bold, inquire what a person is going through, you will be surprised how much they want to share with you, a total stranger, in a matter of minutes
3. Listen carefully to their needs, then let the Holy Spirit minister directly by praying and laying hands on them. No matter how brilliant your counseling advice might be, you will never outperform the Holy Spirit!
4. Always close the deal, bring them across the finishing line, do the work of an evangelist :)
Acts 3:6 - Then Peter said, ”Silver and gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you …’
1 Thessalonians 2:4 - But as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, even so we speak, not as pleasing men, but God…
2 Timothy 4:6 - But you be watchful in all things … do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry…
