Harvest outside a Drug Clinic for Junkies

by Wai-yee Schmidt

December 17, 2016

I was roped in by a friend just before Christmas to help distribute presents to the homeless and drug addicts outside a government clinic in the inner city that dispenses methadone.

As a backstory, I have participated in this tiny outreach in previous years and I knew that because many were either on drugs or alcohol, they were very often not lucid enough to talk about God. Often times, they would be open to receive prayers when offered to them. So I decided I would just go that evening and hand out presents, maybe offer prayer etc., without expectation of any actual harvest. Besides I have been totally drained from the run-up to Christmas. As awful as it might sound for a ‘Spirit-filled believer’, all I was looking forward to was … getting through Christmas — the holiday celebrating the birth of our Savior… Hey, don’t go all judge-gy on me … I am human after all and I too have days when I am not on full battery charge with the Holy Spirit!

Many addicts and homeless were already gathered outside the clinic. They were over the moon to receive warm socks and scarves that were packed for them by local churches. I engaged in a conversation with an older man that was limping. I asked him about his leg and whether I could pray for him. He didn’t sense any improvement after I laid hands twice on his knee. I then noticed he was getting impatient and told me in a nice way, thanks but no thanks, he just wants to get hold of some presents before they disappear.

Undeterred, I approached others asking them what I could provide them with. Suddenly, a guy came up to me requesting specifically for a white colored hat. I was surprised by his audacity. I thought that was a little rude and I couldn’t help myself, but quipped in good humor that he was being picky about the presents. Somehow that got his attention and he came back with a sharp retort. I thought how unusual for someone outside the clinic. We started talking and I found out that he was a Moroccan Muslim and had lived in Frankfurt almost all his life. Once he heard that this gift distribution was an effort by local Christian churches, he said he always believed in God. As a Muslim child, he already read parts of the Christian Bible, and knew even who Abraham and Moses were!!

TEACHING POINT:

Be BOLD, move in the Prophetic for the LOST, not just in church, among believers. Lean in and listen to the Holy Spirit while witnessing. He almost always has a personal word for the person you are witnessing to. He loves to release Words of Knowledge that function as powerful keys into their hearts. Prophetic Evangelization can effectively cut through layers of unbelief to get to the core QUICKLY - something that friendship- or formula-based evangelization cannot!

1 Corinthians 2:9-10 (NKJV)
‘Eye has not seen, nor ear has heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.’ But God has revealed them to US through His Spirit.
